Horned Beast

Once again, here I am messing around in Painter and a fractal generator. This started out as a bit of a doodle and wound up as the wallpaper on my mobile phone. Well, no one else has got wallpaper like this.>

A Book of Horrors

Cover for A Book of Horrors, edited by Stephen Jones and published by Jo Fletcher Books. It's unusual for me to create an entirely digital cover, but after a lot of discussion with the editor and publisher it seemed the only way to go. It was very well received.

The Moon is a Harsh Mistress

A personal piece.Nothing to do with the Robert Heinlein book really, but I've always loved the title. This was mostly done in Painter and was a result of experimenting with layers.

The Planet Stealers

A personal piece. A completely made up title. This is another result of me playing around in Painter. It sort of 'grew' out of a few scribbles. I'm never quite sure when a digital piece is finished because you can adjust things forever, which is what is happening here. I think this is really a work in progress.

Nimue

A personal piece. I’m a big fan of Bernard Cornwell’s Winter King trilogy and tried to make this look like an alternative cover for one of the books in that series. Nimue is one of the central characters in the story and has great influence on the course of events while the supposed hero is busy fighting.

Chronicles of the Serpent Helm

Personal piece. I find a lot of digital artwork overly fussy so I was trying to bring my simple approach to bear. It's very easy to get bound up with special effects and to lose sight of the basic idea. Now used on Artifacts of Legend for Mindforge Games and on a German bookcover.

Ageing Illustrator

This portrait of a rather decrepit and down-at-heel illustrator was done for inclusion in the 2004 Terry Pratchett calendar. It's digital and, for software fans, was done in Painter. I think anyone who knows the program will know just what's going on here.

The Mammoth Book of Best New Horror #16

Cover for Constable & Robinson's collection of horror and dark fantasy fiction, edited by Stephen Jones, including stories by Kim Newman, Neil Gaiman, China Miéville, Paul McAuley, Glen Hirshberg, Ramsey Campbell and Tanith Lee. The editor wanted to use the bat image from an old painting (see Grail Quest #1, in the Vintage Gallery) so I gave it a new background via some digital jiggery-pokery and repainted parts of the bat in Painter and voila!
