Dragongirl

This is the artwork for the Pern novel by Todd McCaffrey, commissioned by Del Rey in the USA and used by Bantam in the UK. My original sketch had the dragon facing the other way but the Art Editor asked me to turn him round. I was rather dubious but it turned out he was quite right and the eventual illustration is much more dramatic. Although Del Rey specifically requested a blue dragon they have changed the colour to gold. Go figure. See the Prelim Gallery for the sketch.

Dragonheart

This cover for the Todd & Anne McCaffrey Pern novel was commissioned by the US publisher and consequently used on the UK edition. I think it has a slightly different, more decorative feel to some of the previous Pern covers that I've painted, due in part to the arrangement of the dragons. I'm not sure if this is an accident or is because of a difference in approach between UK and US Art Directors. Also used on the US Audio book.

Commission by Gollancz for the Terry Pratchett's Discworld Collectors' Edition Calendar 2008. There tends to be so much going on in a Terry Pratchett book that it's sometimes difficult to settle on one image. Out of Time

A personal piece. I was playing around with some rather Lovecraftian ideas to do with lost cities. Somehow the winged inhabitants of this place transformed themselves into these ladies. The trouble is that I don't think Lovecraft would have had much truck with naked women. Nevertheless I really like the atmosphere of this painting.

Poster design for Scholastic Books of a scene from Macbeth. This was for a poster to introduce children to the delights of Shakespeare. A part of the witches' chant, "double double toil and trouble" etc. was to appear on the cauldron. The Gorge

Personal piece. The idea for this piece came about while I was watching a TV documentary. There was a superb helicopter shot down the length of a mountainous valley with a real sense of vertigo. It suddenly occurred to me that this was exactly where Dracula's castle should be. I originally had the castle jutting out into the middle of the picture, almost in silhouette but I decided that that was too much of a traditional, fantasy book jacket approach and moved the castle to one side. Rather than make the castle too obviously a refuge of the un-dead I kept the gothic aspects to a minimum and placed it in sunlight deliberately keeping my palette subdued. I was hoping that the viewer would gradually focus in on the castle and begin to wonder...

Frontispiece artwork commissioned for Orion's Chronicles of Conan. A collection of Robert E. Howard Conan stories, presented for the first time in chronological order. I wanted to steer well clear of the "steroid barbarian" approach which has become so common. I can't see Conan as a bodybuilder. As far as I know there were no gyms in Cimmeria. I re-read the original stories to try and get the right feel and to try to avoid some of the more usual clichés. His costume is derived from Howard's description, although strictly speaking Conan should be wearing shorts! I sort of felt that wouldn't work. See the original sketch in the Prelims Gallery.

Personal piece. I had a large canvas laying around the studio for ages. I'd originally intended it for a portrait but felt it was really a bit too big. Then I decided one day to use it to paint Tarzan, mostly, I think, because I'd already painted a green ground on it. I definitely wanted a heroic figure, but without the ripped muscles and bulging veins of much fantasy art, more of a return to the Johnny Weismuller look.
