Commissioned by TV Times magazine to illustrate an article about women in space in the 1980s. Also used on a Russian book cover. The sexist elements in this painting are entirely the fault of the Art Director. No, really.

A private commission for a client who likes spaceships. It's a slightly unusual spacecraft design for me as I usually go for a more "retro" look, but I like the feeling of scale.

This was a private commission from a client who had fallen in love with the cover for Starmaker. It's always interesting to revisit an older painting with a fresh eye. I tried to make it a bit more epic which was helped by the landscape format.

Terminal 555

A personal piece. I was toying with the idea of spacecraft moored to towers in the fashion of old airships. However I was painting this while listening to the news about the disastrous opening of Terminal 5 at London's Heathrow Airport, and that story influenced what I was doing, hence the title. I suddenly had this vision of the whole of the UK concreted over and turned into one huge airport. It's only a matter of time.

Flight Plan

A personal piece. This painting started out in a completely different fashion but eventually evolved into this. It was meant to be a companion piece to Auriga, with a similar colour scheme, but other stuff started to happen and I just followed along. Used on The Odyssey 2010 and World Horror Convention 2010 joint poster.;

H.G. Wells Anthology

Originally commissioned for an Octopus Books H.G. Wells anthology, but not used by them. Used on two US editions of War of the Worlds, by Ace in 1988 and Bantam in 2003. Also used in the National Geographic programme entitled Naked Science: Close Encounters and on the "making of" documentary of Spielberg's War of the Worlds DVD. The War of the Worlds is one of my favourite books, but, with the possible exception of Tom Kidd's version, I've never seen a really convincing rendering of the Martian tripods. This was one of my attempts. I think I must have another go soon.

The Best of Frank Herbert 1952 - 1964

Commissioned by Sphere for an anthology of Frank Herbert stories. I'm not sure if this image was ever used. I certainly have never seen a copy. I was astonished a couple of years ago, to come across a very similar image by James Bama for a Doc Savage novel. I'd never seen it before but the resemblance is spooky.

A personal piece. This was largely inspired by a magazine illustration I saw as a kid which showed a large spaceship in orbit. Hardcover and paperback cover for a book by Margaret Weis and Don Perrin, The Knights of the Black Earth Vol. 2, published by Gollancz. Under Pressure

Personal piece. As with all the spaceship paintings in this series I was primarily concerned with the feeling of the piece and I gradually began to get the sense that this ship was about to break it's restraints and leap upwards at any second. Hence the title. Although it was intended to be a fairly broad painting it's hard not to get caught up doing all the fiddly bits.

Mutant Chronicles

N.B. Copyright © Target Games.Gamebox cover for Target Games, Sweden. A large painting with, for me, lots of detail. The characters had already been designed for the game and the clients wanted the painting to be a combination of Alien and Hellraiser in feel, so there are elements of both, I hope. The whole look of the game was very dark. I've never seen it in the shops though. See the Prelims Gallery for the original concept sketch.

Retro Rocket

Personal piece. One of my early influences was a newspaper comic strip called Jeff Hawke (OK, so my parents read the Daily Express, I admit it...) It was exquisitely drawn by Sidney Jordan and I think this spaceship harks back to his work a little. Used on the cover of Best Short Novels 2004 published by the Science Fiction Book Club of Bookspan. Personal piece. I'd had a bunch of acrylic paints in my drawer, unused for ages, because my first choice of paint has always been Oil. I just decided, one day, that as I'd got them I might as well make use of them and, without much thought, began to rough out a painting of a spaceship.
